2H00’ – Walking tour
One of the most extended medieval Historic Centre of Europe, is a maze of alleys (caruggi) and small squares, among the highlights the Cathedral, the Doge’s Palace and the Opera House, till the “Strada Nuova” (“New Street” or Via Garibaldi), listed in the UNESCO Heritage.
The Genoese mood arises in these alleys, where different smells, flavours, languages and cultures have always been mixing together. In these narrow spaces, between hills and sea, rich merchants and noble Genoese built splendid residences, where many works of art were collected and guarded for centuries and is still possible to admire them in some of these palaces, nowadays converted in public museums. Genoa can boast a relevant number of “botteghe storiche” (historic shops) and even the names of the alleys often remind a past strongly linked to traditional craft activities and corporations, like Via degli Orefici or Vico del Ferro.
