A striking and easy itinerary allowing us the discover of Mantua and its province immersed in the countryside along the river Mincio starting from the most important Italian river Po.
San Benedetto Po – one of the most beautiful villages – preserves artistic treasures that should not be missed : the monastery of Polirone, founded in 1007 by Tedald of Canossa, grandfather of the great Matilde who was used to retreat here in spirituality and the grandiose Abbey church rebuilt between 1540 and 1545 by Giulio Romano without demolishing the old Romanesque and Gothic elements. We reach the boarding point by bike to continue toward Mantua by motorboat across the basin of Governolo – named “water elevator” – and the lakes, admiring the city reflected in the calm waters. Guided bike ride to the historic centre and beginning of the bike lane that links Mantua to Lake Garda enjoying unusual landscapes and artistic glimpses. After passing the National Natural Reserve Bosco della Fontana with flora and fauna that conceal the historic Gonzaga building used by the Duke of Mantua as his house-hunting near the end of ‘500, we reach the final stage of the first day, Goito. Former Lombard settlement is worth a visit : Bridge of Glory, Villa Giraffa, the ancient municipal Tower, the Basilica dedicated to our Lady of Good Health, Villa and Park Moschini, the old Mill.
The second stage begins with a brief stop at the old water mill of Massimbona and immediately over Pozzolo, picturesque village on the last slope of the moraine hills of Garda, important for the Fossa a powerful system that withdraws water from the river Mincio distributing it in the mid province of Mantua through dams and ditches. We delight us with another of the most beautiful villages in Italy: Borghetto sul Mincio with Mills, waterfalls and quaint houses giving it an unrivalled charm completed with the ancient village of Valeggio whwe get to biking along the Visconti bridge from the 14th century. Before reaching the final destination, we pass through Monzambano on the hills of lower Garda groves and vineyards with its castle from the 11th century standing on a hill overlooking the town centre.
Peschiera del Garda holds visible testimonies of all historical periods: from the age of pile dwelling cultures to the Roman period, from the high and late Middle Ages to the Scala Lordship, from Venice domination to the Napoleonic era, the Habsburg reign, when Peschiera was one of the four strongholds of the Quadrangle, the most imposing defensive system of Italy
