The Church of San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore is documented since the 9th century, entrusted to the female Benedictine Congregation played a prominent role in the events of Milan not only religious, even political and economic. The magnificent paintings celebrate two important figures from influential families in the history of Milan and beyond : the Bentivoglio from Bologna and the Sforza, the undisputed Lords of Milan.
The art of Bernardino Luini, Leonardo’s follower, combines light with naturalism both in the room of the devotees and the cloistered Hall, divided by a wall on which Bernardino represents great official scenes (1522-23). Other great artists of the 16th century contributed brilliantly to make unique San Maurizio: Antonio Campi, Simone Peterzano, Callisto Piazza, etc.
