The town is
a cultural hotspot featuring a long, rich tradition and some of the
most important events of the Italian history. Struck in Roman times at the base
of the rocky spur of the Doss
Trento, an imposing defensive wall was constructed around it in the
Middle Ages.. Around the year 1.000, the Holy Roman Emperor founded the
Bishopric of Trent; it became a long-standing religious center of notable
importance. Above all, the famous Council of Trent took place here,
establishing the Counter-Reformation.
The 1500s were the time of Trento’s golden age, thanks to the bishops who
advocated for the construction of new churches and palaces. The political,
religious, commercial and monumental heart of the town is Piazza del
Duomo surrounded by splendid noble frescoed palaces, especially the Case Cazuffi-Rella.
The square also hosts the Romanesque Duomo of San Vigilio, built in
1212 as well as Palace Pretorio and the Neptune fountain. It worths visiting
the Castle Buonconsiglio used as bishops’ residence from the 1200s to the 1700s;
it is composed of several buildings
dating different ages, now housings different museums.
Also remarkable are the palaces in Venetian-Renaissance style long Street Belenzani with the front facades magnificently frescoed.
